Abstract

As educational systems seek to meet the varied demands of individual learners, universal design for learning (UDL) has taken center stage as a proposed framework for promoting inclusion and equity in teaching. Thus, this chapter explores how UDL provides a connection between accessibility and effective pedagogy, thereby signifying its alignment with ideals rooted in social justice and equitable education. Universal design for learning or UDL focuses on how to design versatile learning environments that accommodate individual differences through multiple means of engagement, representation, and expression so that all individuals have the opportunity to learn and succeed. This chapter argues for making use of new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), learning analytics, assistive technologies, and gamification to help reach more students and to promote UDL in the classroom. Integrating these tools empowers educators to create personalized, adaptive lessons that cater to diverse learners, including students with disabilities and from marginalized backgrounds.
