Abstract

Laser surface texturing has garnered significant attention in recent decades for customizing material surfaces for particular functional qualities essential to cutting-edge engineering inventions and products. Laser texturing is a method for creating surfaces with the desired pattern. Geometrical patterns and surface chemistry features are responsible for the impact of laser surface texturing patterns on functional qualities. The purpose of this chapter is to analyze the most recent research regarding laser surface shaping and texturing. This chapter essentially offers a thorough summary of the most advanced laser surface design technology, emphasizing its capacity to personalize surface capabilities that are crucial for developing technical products and spurring creativity. Many studies have examined the significance of surface texturing in altering the characteristics of various materials to obtain the advantages. These developments are intended to improve surface functioning, making materials more appropriate for antibacterial, biocompatible, and corrosion-resistant qualities. Researchers have changed the surface properties of materials by using a variety of lasers and laser irradiation. It is widely utilized to change the mechanical and tribological characteristics, including wettability, corrosion resistance, wear resistance, self-healing, anti-drag, and antibiofouling. Laser surface texturing is a cutting-edge technology that can enhance surface geometry and texture, especially in areas like biology, tribology, and material wettability. Surface texturing significantly improves tribological qualities such as wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and friction resistance. In addition, surface texturing has made it possible for us to develop new technologies, including better biological implants, super-hydrophobic coatings, age-resistant materials, materials with enhanced wettability, and higher light trapping by solar cells.
