Abstract

As artificial intelligence (AI) progresses toward agentic autonomy, security paradigms must evolve to match. This chapter explores the technical foundations of agentic AI systems—architectures capable of planning, adapting, and acting independently across time. With the integration of long-term memory, multimodal reasoning, and recursive decision loops, these systems depart significantly from traditional predictive models, introducing a new class of systemic vulnerabilities that adversaries can exploit at the reasoning, memory, and interface layers. The discussion delves into emerging attack vectors specific to agentic behavior, such as perturbation escalation within recursive loops, cross-modal inference drift, and adversarial conditioning of memory and context. It explains how symbolic logic components, hierarchical planning mechanisms, and tool interaction interfaces become surfaces for exploitation when not reinforced with embedded safety and ethical constraints. Practical scenarios illustrate how subtle manipulations—when strategically applied—can trigger large-scale misalignment in agents designed to operate with autonomy. To counter these threats, the chapter emphasizes the need for integrated constraint logic, formal reasoning validation, automated robustness evaluation, and architectural introspection. Readers are equipped with the conceptual tools needed to shift from reactive security measures to proactive, embedded design principles that prioritize resilience, traceability, and ethical compliance. This chapter is essential for cybersecurity professionals, AI engineers, and risk leaders seeking to secure the next generation of intelligent systems operating beyond static inference.
