Abstract

This chapter acknowledges that there is more than one way to teach communication. Many healthcare programs have benefited from founding faculty with strengths in educational pedagogy and innovative design, who have constructed their own way forward, based upon curricular time allotment, staffing, and other resources. As technological advances push us outside of our comfort zone, the landscape of teaching continues to evolve. We don't know what the future of communication training will be. What we do know is that adult learners benefit from different approaches when placed in any classroom. This chapter introduces problem-based learning (PBL), simulation-based training (SBT), and the author's own curricular integration of communication training within the context of developing active engagement opportunities for the adult learner.
