Abstract

This chapter discusses the importance of authentic client interactions and how pairing these with video review can be an invaluable teaching tool. At the same time, this chapter acknowledges and explains the shift toward simulation in healthcare training, particularly during the preclinical years. The primary goal of simulation is to provide a safe, supportive learning environment in which client interactions can be scripted and realistic, yet low risk. As simulation content intensifies, learners can practice and immerse themselves in intense clinical scenarios without fear of contributing to patient and/or client distress. This chapter introduces various ways to build simulation into communication curricula and outlines why preplanning is imperative. By the end of this chapter, readers will have many options to choose from in terms of what kind of simulation set-up is most appropriate for both their learners and their institutions.
