Higher Education For and In the Age of AI
Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI), until recently visible to the public largely through science fiction books and movies, burst onto center stage with the introduction of ChatGPT in 2022. Machine learning refers to computer programs that make predictions based on patterns in historical data and perform better as they process additional data. AI is affecting work in a wide range of fields. Education for the age of AI presents three overlapping requirements. First, each and every student must be prepared to navigate a world where AI is pervasive. Second, students in engineering, the natural sciences, and beyond must be equipped to use AI in advanced ways. Third, students in computer science and related fields must learn not just how to use AI, but how to build AI, how to move the field of AI forward, and how to do all of this through an ethical and societal lens.
