The Mutual Alignment of AI and Society
Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) impacts almost every aspect of our lives today and has significant implications for our economy and for the future of work. Aligning AI with society requires expanding AI developers' understanding of society and the public's understanding of AI. AI developers need to be more prescient about the ethical and societal implications of their work, while society at large needs to better understand AI and its implications for our society and economy. AI systems have been implicated in fatal crashes involving airplanes and autonomous cars. National and international bodies will need to become better at understanding and anticipating the potential consequences of AI, so that regulation can be proactive rather than merely reactive. There is a huge gap between what is needed to understand how AI systems work and the level of understanding of the public today.
