A Different View of Space and Time
Abstract
The brilliant idea that Maxwell had in 1865 is a way of reconstructing a local frame of reference that enables the construction of a new approach to mechanics. The concepts of length and time are independent discrete invariants. In this new space defined by the Maxwell local reference frame, the notion of the scalar is in agreement with that of classical mechanics. The proper or intrinsic acceleration of a particle or a material medium is the only absolute quantity considered to derive the equation of motion of discrete physics. In the absence of an absolute frame of reference, Newtonian mechanics is based on Galileo's notion of the relativity of velocities. In fact, both the Galileo and Lorentz inescapable invariance would be incompatible, and non-comparable. The principle of parsimony can be considered as a logical step in the reduction of the strictly necessary physical quantities for the description of a physical model.
