Abstract

Hydrogen sulfide analysis is important for corrosion protection of pipelines, catalyst protection in refinery operations, and environmental compliance. This chapter focuses on the lead acetate method for hydrogen sulfide analysis. Two approaches to obtaining a hydrogen sulfide measurement using lead acetate detection are change-of-color and rate-of-change of color. Proper design of the sample conditioning system requires knowledge of the stream composition, its temperature, and its pressure. One of the first concerns to the sample system designer is the sample dew point. With any analyzer, calibration is required to establish a base response and to provide a means for interpreting the output signal. The chapter lists major electrical codes, certifying authorities, and the countries where the codes apply. Obtaining the required electrical certification for a given installation can occur in two ways: certification of the design and certification of the installation.
