Total Sulfur Analyzers
Abstract
Sulfur reacts with the catalyst material, forming metal sulfides and rendering the catalyst nonfunctional. A total sulfur value of the feedstock, however, does provide the information needed to prevent sulfur exposure to the catalyst material. Achieving quantitative sulfur conversion to hydrogen sulfide without carbon formation in the pyrolyzer is necessary when using the lead acetate detector in total sulfur analyzer service. Achieving hydrogen sulfide and total sulfur values from a total sulfur analyzer with a lead acetate detector simply involves diverting the combined carrier and samples flows around the pyrolyzer. On-line sulfur chromatography is possible because it uses the lead acetate-based total sulfur analyzer as a gas chromatographic detector. While it is possible in theory to use a gaseous standard on a liquid service total sulfur analyzer, this approach is not recommended for sub-ppm applications.
