Abstract

The oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) measurement has been most widely used for end-point detection of potentiometric redox titrations in laboratories, but has also been successfully applied in the process environment. Redox measurements must be made by measuring the potential of the ORP electrode against a suitable reference electrode. Successful applications of ORP in process environments include chemical reduction of chromate wastes and the chemical oxidation of cyanide waste with chlorine. Highly toxic hexavalent chromate solutions are produced from plating and rinsing procedures used in the plating industry. ORP sensors and analyzers utilize approximately the same options and accessories as pH sensors. An ORP analyzer is a measuring device for electrode potential. To assure that the sensor has continuity, a resistance measurement is taken at the ORP indicating sensor surface and the cable lead (or connector) is used to carry the signal.
