Abstract

Chemiluminescence, the emission of light by the product of a chemical reaction, is today one of the most widely-used phenomena in stack gas and ambient air-monitoring instrumentation. This chapter describes the gas flow system and ozone generation system. The basic equipment required for calibration of all chemiluminescence nitrogen oxide analyzers include zero gas source, nitric oxide concentration standard, and nitrogen dioxide concentration standard. Chemiluminescence nitrogen oxide analyzers are utilized by numerous industries, federal and state agencies, and university and research institutions. Each particular industry and/or application has its own unique sampling requirements. The chapter presents a brief discussion of those areas that are most critical to the performance of chemiluminescence analyzers in source applications. These include the influence of quenching gases and viscosity changes on the chemiluminescent measurement, the effect and importance of interfering gases, and, finally, the choice and application of the extractive sampling system.
