Abstract

GRF, which operates the majority of the French river transport network, is considering implementing blockchain technology with the major players in river transport: the principal, the charterer, the riverboat operator. Different scenarios are considered (single-actor blockchain, consortium blockchain, hybrid blockchain). GRF uses blockchain solutions to ensure optimal reconciliation between the three major flows of a supply chain: logistics flows, information flows and financial flows. Although the relational fabric of GRF is complex, we can identify four main types of actors in river transport: the principal, the charterer, the riverboat operator and GRF, constituting a network. Furthermore, each type of actor constitutes a network, or an organization in its own right. The charterer also maintains strong links with GRF. Transfer of personnel between GRF and the charterer is quite frequent, and thus relations between the two entities are quite close.
