Abstract

Abstract The ius respondendi was a supposed privilege granted by Augustus to select jurists to give legally binding opinions on his authority. Its existence has been heavily disputed because it relies essentially on a single source, leading to much speculation. While it has a firm part in the tradition of Roman legal history, there is little to suggest that it would have existed as an institution or individual privilege.
