Prose Rhythm, Latin
Abstract
Abstract Classical Latin prose, like classical Latin poetry, had perceptible rhythms based on patterns of long and short syllables, called clausulae. Individual Latin authors had individual rhythmic preferences. Attention to these preferences can yield more sensitive close readings and sometimes help adjudicate questions about, for example, the attribution of doubtful works.
