Abstract

The bleaching herbicide aclonifen was first registered in 1984. Some 35 years later, an enzyme involved in plastoquinone biosynthesis, solanesyl diphosphate synthase (SPS), was identified as its target. Here, an overview of the synthesis and biological activity of aclonifen is given, and the molecular interaction with its novel, previously unknown target is described. Recent developments beyond the diphenyl ether-based aclonifen substructure, represented by rimisoxafen, and a variety of new SPS inhibitors published in the patent literature are discussed.
