Abstract

While continuous stirred-tank reactors (CSTRs) and plug flow reactors (PFRs) are widely regarded as traditional reactor designs, fluidized processes continue to be categorized as non-traditional—despite being in commercial operation for over a century, beginning with the Winkler coal gasifier in the 1920s. Today, thousands of fluidized process units operate worldwide, serving as reactors, crackers, combustors, gasifiers, pyrolyzers, absorbers, heater treaters, granulators, coaters, and dryers, among other applications. Many of these applications have been recognized as breakthrough technologies.
