Abstract

A unique combination of low-dimensional architecture, high configurational entropy, and exceptional physicochemical properties makes functional two-dimensional (2D) high-entropy materials (HEMs) extremely promising for energy storage applications. These materials, which are made by combining five or more fundamental elements in almost equimolar ratios, are ideal for energy storage devices because of their remarkable thermal stability, tunable electrical conductivity (10 −2 –10 −3 Sm −1 ), and ionic transport properties. Various advancements have significantly enhanced their electrochemical properties, supporting their adoption in next-generation energy storage systems by enhancing the cycle stabilities, energy and power densities of the devices. This chapter explores the latest developments in 2D-based HEMs for energy storage, focusing on their structural benefits, charge storage behavior, and potential research directions. The inherent high-entropy characteristics and 2D nature of these materials offer great potential for transforming energy storage technologies, contributing to more efficient, long-lasting, and high-performance energy storage solutions.
