Abstract

Research into phosphate laser glasses aims to balance efficient laser emission with high mechanical strength. A crucial aspect of this effort is understanding the deviation of luminescence behavior with varying concentration of the Sm ions, which provides key insights into the behavior of functional glasses and guides the design of novel compositions. In this study, we investigate the interrelationships between the structure, the local chemical environment of Sm 3+ ions, and the spectroscopic properties in a series of 30K 2 O–5TiO 2 –5Nb 2 O 5 –(60–x) P 2 O 5 glasses. These glasses exhibit strong near‐UV absorption, making them suitable for near‐UV laser excitation. We employed Judd–Ofelt theory on photoluminescence spectra to determine fundamental spectral parameters, including oscillator strength, stimulated emission cross‐section, radiative transition probability, and branch ratios. The measured Commission Internationale de l’Éclairage (CIE) coordinates were ( x = 0.599, y = 0.401) under 404‐nm excitation. The collective structural and luminescent properties demonstrate that this glass is a promising candidate for solid‐state orange lasers, optical amplifiers, sensors, and advanced photonic devices.
