Abstract

Photovoltaic array partial shading causes a significant amount of power loss due to mismatch losses and bottlenecked currents. This paper offers a comparative analysis of performance of four photovoltaic (PV) array configurations (series‐parallel (SP), bridge‐link (BL), honey comb (HC), and a proposed total‐tied (TT)) based on modeling of standardized 5 x 5 array (nominal power of 375 W) under four conditions of partial shading: short‐narrow (SN), short‐wide (SW), long‐narrow (LN), and long‐wide (LW). The suggested TT setup uses an optimized strategy with the aim of offering specific redistribution of current along with limited implementation complexity. TT under SN shading has optimum power 245.88 W, fill factor 73.56%, and efficiency 13.9144%, which are 0.26% higher than SP (244.24 W), 0.49% higher than BL (244.67 W), and 0.34 percentage points higher than HC (245.05 W). In the SW, LN, and LW shading conditions, TT has a stable performance advantage with power output of 234.80, 235.23, and 234.65 W, respectively, showing a mismatch power loss of 37.39%, 37.27%, and 37.43% at all conditions, respectively, which is significantly less than conventional configurations. The selective approach of the topology improves the fault tolerance by 20%–30% and also minimizes the implementation complexity.
