Abstract

The steadily growing population and increasing commercial and freight traffic present the city of Vienna with major infrastructural challenges. To meet these demands and simultaneously ensure sustainable urban development, modern and efficient transport connections are essential. In this context, the Aspern urban road (and also the Lobau Tunnel) play a central role. Both projects contribute significantly to relieving inner‐city traffic congestion, improving access to urban development areas in northeast Vienna, and thus also promoting urban and economic development. From a geotechnical perspective, these projects represent particularly demanding undertakings due to their location, dimensions, and soil conditions, requiring innovative solutions and precise planning. This article highlights the positive impacts of the "Aspern urban road" infrastructure project on the city of Vienna and provides an overview of the geotechnical challenges and solutions that must be addressed during its implementation.
