MXenes in Next‐Generation Light‐Emitting Diodes: Innovations, Challenges, and Future Prospects
Abstract
ABSTRACT Two‐dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides (MXenes) have rapidly emerged as high‐performance materials for next‐generation light‐emitting diodes (LEDs), offering a unique combination of metallic conductivity, tunable work function, optical transparency, and mechanical robustness. Their incorporation into organic, quantum‐dot, and perovskite LEDs has led to significant improvements in charge injection, carrier balance, operating voltage, stability, and device flexibility parameters directly linked to energy‐efficient light generation. Despite these advances, the field lacks a comprehensive review that connects MXene chemistry with device‐level energy performance. Here, we critically examine the roles of MXenes as transparent electrodes, interfacial modifiers, charge‐transport enhancers, and emissive materials in state‐of‐the‐art LED architectures. We highlight structure‐property relationships, surface‐termination effects, and interface‐engineering strategies that govern charge dynamics and energy utilization. By consolidating recent breakthroughs while identifying key challenges in synthesis, defect control, and scalability, this review provides a timely roadmap for leveraging MXenes to enable low‐power, stable, flexible, and intelligent solid‐state lighting and display technologies.
