Abstract

Abstract The author, a researcher and executive advisor with over 25 years of leadership experience, writes that through his “own experience as well as those I have led and coached, even when you have a clear and compelling goal powered by a heartfelt why, you may still find yourself stuck in place.” He notes that being a successful, high performer, does not exempt you from getting stuck on important programs and processes, even if you have a guiding purpose. He discusses his concept of “commitment capital,” which he writes “is the combination of human, social, and other resources an individual uses to execute and complete a specific task.” He further describes commitment as “choosing to invest your limited resources—like time, money, energy, and skills—into one thing, knowing that doing so means you can't use those same resources elsewhere.” Four steps in diagnosing commitment capital are explained; in his words: 1. Understand the effort 2. Identify whether you have the competencies needed for success 3. Assess your willingness to close your competency gaps 4. Evaluate your time and energy 5. Plan your interventions.
