Quasi‐Static Indentation Resistance Behavior of Bionic Hybrid‐Helicoidal Composite Laminates
Abstract
ABSTRACT To enhance the indentation resistance of composite laminates, a hybrid‐helicoidal structure inspired by the defensive microstructures of the Odontodactylus scyllarus and the Homarus americanus was proposed. Eighteen types of helicoidal configurations were designed, comprehensively considering material constituents, helical angle growth patterns (sinusoidal, linear, and quadratic), and helicoidal architectures (single‐helicoidal and hybrid‐helicoidal). The mechanical response and damage mechanisms of the composite laminates subjected to quasi‐static indentation were investigated with respect to material composition and stacking sequence. It was found that for a single material system, the optimal helical angle growth pattern depends on the constitutive properties of the material. When the laminates adopt an alternating Basalt Fiber‐Reinforced Polymer (BFRP)/Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) layup, the peak loads of most hybrid helicoidal configurations are highly consistent. This study deepens the understanding of the complex interaction mechanisms between material composition and stacking sequence in composite laminates subjected to quasi‐static indentation, providing a theoretical basis and guidance for the design of high‐performance composite materials.
