Abstract

ABSTRACT Elastomeric vitrimers, which have recently gained momentum due to their recyclability, are seen as a potential sustainable candidate to conventional sulfur‐cured rubber. Herein, we demonstrate the development of epoxidized EPDM‐based vitrimer cured with XNBR. The elastomer vitrimer is found to be recyclable and to have recycle‐enhancing characteristics. Dynamic crosslinks have been achieved by incorporating β‐hydroxyl ester bonds during curing. The simplicity of the epoxidation and curing processes, combined with fast processing via injection molding, represents a disruptive innovation in the research work. The process utilized a zinc acetate catalyst, which made the material processible by injection molding. The aim of the work has been to optimize the material and process for end‐use applications such as sealing rings, diaphragms, and hoses in aviation. The aviation industry is the ultimate challenge for material evolution. Elastomers used for such high‐end applications need validation of the highest standards due to flight safety concerns. For the first time, these synthesized elastomeric vitrimer has been tested for their candidacy for aviation applications, such as seals, gaskets, diaphragms, and hoses. Swelling properties for specific aviation‐related oil and fuel grade resistance have been carried out in the research work. This work is a leap towards the realization of an aviation‐grade elastomeric vitrimer.
