Abstract

ABSTRACT Agricultural crop residues (ACRs) are constituents that remain after harvesting a crop in an agricultural field. ACRs are waste materials. Management of such ACRs is a major challenge. It influences not only the income and well‐being of farmers but also environment and human health. Numerous research have been performed to address the issue of managing ACRs. However, researchers are still searching for financially sustainable and farmer friendly solutions. Therefore, finding novel ways to convert waste into wealth is necessary. This article discusses various ACRs management technologies through thermochemical, biochemical, and chemical conversion into bioenergy, and also details their operational parameters, technological principles, and implementation prospects. The review compares the advantages and challenges of each process to measure their overall efficiency and suitability. This study also highlights management of agricultural crop residues as materials for designing energy conversion and energy storage device, like supercapacitors, solar cells, and different types of batteries. This review discusses about benefits and risks of using ACRs for production of biofuels and bioenergy. This study not only functions as a guide for management of ACRs in a sustainable and eco‐friendly way but also endorses overall sustainable development for the sake of a better tomorrow.
