Extending Structured Dialogic Design With Multi‐Criteria Evaluation: Toward Sustainable Multi‐Species Governance
Abstract
ABSTRACT This paper presents an innovative integration of structured democratic dialogue with a multi‐criteria evaluation step designed to strengthen participatory decision‐making for complex socio‐ecological challenges. Conducted virtually with Communities of Practice focused on multi‐species governance, the process combined systemic mapping of influence relations with participatory scoring of actions against selected criteria (impact, feasibility and likelihood). The resulting hybrid method produced findings that were both conceptually grounded in systemic interdependencies and practically prioritised for action. A consensually developed influence tree comprising six levels highlights where structural leverage and stakeholder priorities converged. Methodological reflections indicate that the additional scoring enriched deliberation but introduced cognitive demands that required careful facilitation. A critical distinction is made between participatory multi‐criteria evaluation and formal MCDA techniques, situating the approach as participatory, accessible, yet rigorous. The study demonstrates a replicable model for inclusive governance that links ecological interdependencies with democratic practice.
