Abstract

ABSTRACT The behavior of composite steel plate shear walls (CSPSWs) subjected to shear and bending is investigated analytically and numerically. An analytical method is first developed to predict the ultimate shear strength of CSPSW, accounting for moment‐shear interaction. Then, a 3D finite‐element (FE) model for CSPSWs is developed and validated against experimentally tested one‐ and two‐story CSPSWs. This model is used to evaluate the precision of the proposed analytical method for predicting the shear capacity of CSPSWs under shear and bending. Finally, a moment‐shear interaction diagram is established for CSPSWs. Moreover, the effect of using engineered cementitious composites (ECC) on the ultimate shear capacity of CSPSWs is evaluated by replacing conventional concrete with ECC. It is seen that the proposed analytical method agrees well with numerical results. It can precisely estimate the ultimate shear capacity of CSPSWs subjected to shear and bending. Results also indicate that the behavior of CSPSWs is significantly affected by the applied moment, where the increase in the applied moment reduces the ultimate shear strength of CSPSWs. The use of ECC increases the ultimate shear strength and energy absorption capacity of CSPSWs.
