Building Knowledge, Building Minds: How Content‐Rich Instruction Matters for Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension
Abstract
ABSTRACT This article makes the case for building knowledge as a central component of early literacy instruction. Drawing from classroom observations and research‐based practices, it emphasizes that comprehension is not a generic skill but is deeply tied to content knowledge and vocabulary. The article highlights key design features for knowledge‐building, including the use of topics, content‐rich vocabulary, and scaffolded questioning to foster deeper understanding. It argues that knowledge should be interconnected, culturally inclusive, and engaging—helping all children to think critically and make meaningful connections. By ensuring shared knowledge among students, educators can reduce disparities and create a more equitable learning environment where every child has the opportunity to succeed.
