Political positioning of legislative reform proposals
Abstract
Many of you are disappointed by the UK government's decision to conflate proposals to reform the outdated Veterinary Surgeons Act with issues raised by the Competition and Markets Authority's investigation into vet services for household pets, in particular the cost of vet care. We understand your frustrations and we've raised concerns directly with government. However, we know securing political support for these proposals is critical to getting them into law and this narrative has clearly garnered widespread attention, including from MPs who see it as an opportunity to show action on an issue they believe matters to their constituents and the wider public. Nevertheless it's imperative your vital work and reputation isn't undermined and so we're challenging our elected politicians to avoid perpetuating ill-informed, negative narratives and the use of inflammatory language. #InSafeHands
