The majority population in Ethiopia is dependent on agriculture on state-owned land. Post-1991 Ethiopia has adopted a multi-party democracy and focused on business by encouraging the local market to be driven by the market forces in the context of the international economic system. In the early 2010s, the state attracted large scale agribusiness from the Middle East and India. It provided them with huge farmlands and offered incentives in the form of tax concessions to boost the export of food. This chapter puts philosophical discussions about right to food in dialogue with empirical analysis of its implementation in Ethiopia. We argue that economic and development policies in Ethiopia put the right to food in a precarious relationship with the right to trade.
