Abstract

Abstract There are concerns that the new mining activities necessary for the green energy transition may fuel conflicts in mining countries, particularly in ethnically diverse mining countries. This discussion focuses on how the effects of new mining activities on conflict risk may depend on the location of such activities as well as the country’s entire mining and ethnic geographies. The following section introduces a novel framework that can be applied in quantitative assessments to inform policies for sustainable mining and downstream diversification.
