Abstract

This chapter explores the design, implementation, and applications of Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) in STEM education. It provides an overview of the background and foundational principles of ITS, followed by a detailed framework tailored for STEM learning. The chapter also presents two compelling use cases—ALEKS for personalized mathematics tutoring and PhysicsAssistant for interactive physics lab investigations—that illustrate the transformative potential of ITS. Additionally, it examines practical applications, innovative use cases, and the ethical challenges of deploying ITS in educational contexts. Through a comprehensive discussion, the chapter highlights the promise of ITS in enhancing learning outcomes and fostering equitable access to quality education.
