Abstract

Social media has changed the way public figures connect with their followers. Even without any physical communication, audiences can feel emotionally bonded with a public figure due to a phenomenon called “parasocial interaction”. This research focuses on the impact of interactivity, openness, social and physical attractiveness on the sense of connection with a personality. Moreover, it analyzes the way such feelings affect loyalty and the willingness the followers might have to provide personal information. Information was collected from 435 of Taylor Swift’s Instagram followers through an online questionnaire. The results show that all four variables contribute to stronger emotional connections. This impact was found to be greatest for physical attractiveness. The study also reported that parasocial interaction strengthens the interactivity—physical attractiveness relationship and influences follower loyalty and their willingness to disclose personal information. Essentially, the data indicates that emotional bonds cultivated through social media can affect real-life action. This is particularly important for public figures such as musicians, content creators and other widely recognized people since they need to understand these relationships better to engage with their audiences on a deeper level.
