Throwing off the Shackles of Mechanism

In this chapter, we take the modeling framework of mechanism as a starting point and gradually lift its implicit assumptions, which have rendered it intrinsically unsuitable for the study of living systems. This naturally leads to a more general framework, which will be systematically introduced in the next chapter.
