Abstract

Agriculture is undergoing a profound socio-technical transformation as digital technologies become embedded in everyday farming and rural life. Beyond technical innovation, digitalisation reshapes practices, relationships, and governance, creating both opportunities and new dependencies. To understand and guide this transition, the Business Process Modelling (BPM) method provides structured, visual representations of agricultural processes before and after digitalisation, showing how actors, goals, and workflows evolve. The method, developed and applied in the context of the Horizon Europe project CODECS within 20 Living Labs across Europe, enables farmers, advisors, policymakers, and technologists to co-analyse transformations in multiple agricultural digitalisation contexts. This chapter reports the experience of applying the method, presenting the results openly accessible through two public archives and formulating actionable insights and recommendations to guide future adopters in making agricultural digital transitions more sustainable, comprehensible, and inclusive.
