Safety of Assisted and Automated Systems
Abstract
Driver assistance and automated systems increasingly act and interact in and with the environment. In order to be able to perceive the environment adequately, increasingly complex environment sensors are being used, depending on the level of automation. However, even with a surround view through the sensors, reality cannot be fully perceived. In addition, the behavior of road users must be predicted. Both lead to uncertainties in the system behavior, which is generally described as functional insufficiency. These uncertainties can lead to unintended system behavior. The same applies to hardware and software faults. Standards and other technical specifications can be used as a basis for assessing whether a product is truly safe. The standards on functional safety ISO 26262 and on the safety of the intended functionality ISO 21448 are decisive for this kind of assessment and are therefore presented in this chapter.
