Optimal design of a hybrid active power filter using pelican optimization technique
Abstract
Abstract This paper presents the optimal design of a Hybrid Active Power Filter (HAPF) using the Pelican Optimization (PO) technique to reduce the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of the system source current. The parameters of a Proportional–Integral–Derivative (PID) controller are tuned using both the PO technique and the Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) algorithm for comparative analysis. The system is evaluated under both balanced and unbalanced load conditions. The HAPF is modeled and simulated using MATLAB/Simulink (R2018a). THD levels are observed and compared across three cases: a passive filter alone, an HAPF optimized using PO, and an HAPF optimized using GWO. The power theory (P–Q theory) is employed to generate the reference current for the shunt active filter. Simulation results show that the HAPF improved using PO technique outperforms its counterpart improved by GWO in terms of objective function. Both algorithms exhibit numerical convergence and stability under various load conditions, achieving effective harmonic mitigation. Specifically, the source current THD is reduced from 29.26% to 5.19% using the POA and to 4.99% using the GWO method.
