Abstract

Ethiopian cities, such as Kachise town, which lacks a potential landfill sites, are facing serious problems due to improper landfill sites. The environment and public health are at risk due to this circumstance. This study’s primary goal was to use geospatial technologies to locate appropriate solid waste dump locations in Kachise town. The Space Science and Geospatial Institute and field surveys provided a variety of data sources for this study, including land use, land cover, slope, faults, power lines, rivers, highways, population density, soil data, and water wells. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) were used in a multi-criteria evaluation technique to assign weights to criterion according to their significance. These weights were then integrated to create a suitability map through overlay analyses. According to the results, 15.93% (1.05 km 2 ), 20.79% (1.37 km 2 ), 22.61% (1.49 km 2 ), and 40.67% (2.68 km 2 ) of the entire research area were determined to be highly suitable, suitable, less suitable, and unsuitable for landfill sites, respectively. Two acceptable dump locations that satisfied environmental and scientific standards were found. According to the analysis, landfills sites should be located around Kachise town’s northern, northeastern, southern, and southwestern borders. The study area’s current landfill sites system does not meet scientific and environmental standards because the municipality lacks suitable landfills sites. According to this study, the study region should select the dump site based on a small number of physical, social, economic, and spatial factors.
