Abstract

A new amitrole (3-amino-1,2,4-triazole) derivative ligand was synthesized through a simple step. Acid-base reaction of 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole with glacial acetic acid under reflux to convert triazole amine to amide ligand (N-(1 H-1,2,4-triazole-3-yl)acetamide), (NTA). The NTA ligand was used to synthesize ionic and coordination metal complexes of platinum (IV), palladium (II), mercuric (II), cobalt (II), and nickel (II). All the late transition metal complexes have a mono-ligand structure type, except for the platinum one, which also features a triphenylphosphine ligand in combination with the NTA. Late transition metal complexes and their ligand were identified using various techniques, including CHN analysis, FTIR spectroscopy, 1 H and 12 C NMR spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility, and ICP-MS for metal complexes, and mass spectrometry for the ligand. Notably, all the metal complexes were square planar (distorted octahedral) as the calculations of their µ eff and electronic spectra (d-d transition in UV-visible spectra). Some of these complexes show good catalytic activity in ethylene polymerization and methyl methacrylate (MMA) with 1-hexene (1 H) copolymerization in the presence of aluminum cocatalyst compound to activate the polymerization process. The produced polymers are characterized by FTIR spectroscopy.
