Abstract

A skull described as the holotype of Delphinus (Grampus) acutus was originally in the museum of Joshua Brookes in London (Gray, 1828) and, according to Flower (1884), was sold to the Leiden Museum of Natural History, Netherlands (currently the Naturalis Biodiversity Center) (see Flower, 1884; Broekema, 1983). The type locality, though previously considered “unknown,” was assigned by Gray (1866) to the “Orkney Islands.” Synonyms include Delphinus leucopleurus Rasch, 1843; D. eschrichtii Schlegel, 1841; Lagenorhynchus perspicillatus Cope, 1876; and L. gubernator Cope, 1876 (see Hershkovitz, 1966, for further details).
