The link between green management practices and sustainable environmental performance through the mediating role of employee green behavior: Evidence from large-scale manufacturing organizations
Abstract
This study examined the link between Green Management Practices and Sustainable Environmental Performance through the mediating role of Employee Green behavior: Evidence from Large-scale manufacturing organizations. It also investigated the moderating role of environmental concern in the relationship. This study is done based on the Ability, motivation, and opportunity, social learning, and social exchange theories. In this study, we employed an explanatory study design and utilized a quantitative methodology. For this study, 359 employees properly filled out a self-administered questionnaire, and the results were analyzed using PLS-SEM. In this study, we employed a disjoint two-stage hierarchical component model (HCM) approach to develop GHRM as a formative HOC. Study findings revealed that green management practices significantly and positively affect environmental performance. The efficacy of green management methods is contingent upon their ability to promote employee green behavior, which mediates the relationship. Environmental concern moderated the impact of employee green behavior on environmental performance, indicating that organizations with heightened environmental care can more effectively translate green management principles into sustainable actions. This study demonstrates that employee-centered environmental initiatives are essential for enhancing environmental performance within a developing country scenario. The findings could be useful for employers and leaders who are trying to make operations more sustainable in areas where resources are scarce and the level of technology adoption is low. • Environmental issues are presently the most pressing concern, particularly for developing nations like Ethiopia. • Our research revealed that GHRM strategies greatly improve manufacturing EP. So organizations should implement green practices centered on environmental sustainability to enhance EP. • Support for the environment in the workplace leads to more green innovation and better EP by getting employees more involved and committed to going green. • GTL was shown to develop employees' motivation, promote voluntary green behavior and environmental ownership, resulting in greater commitment towards environmentally friendly practices. • Support for environmentally sustainable activities inside the company greatly influences workers to demonstrate increased green behaviors. • Workers will embrace sustainable working habits, use fewer resources, or participate in green activities in the company if they have the required behavior, which is known as EGB. • Our research provides evidence for the promotion of eco-friendly sustainable practices in the industrial sector of an emerging economy by analyzing the influence of GMPs on EGB.
