Abstract

As artificial intelligence (AI) systems become embedded in oncology care across the Asia Pacific, governance frameworks must evolve beyond technology-centric oversight to include the perspectives and leadership of the nursing workforce. Nurses are uniquely positioned as the “connective tissue” of clinical operations to serve as the essential human control layer, ensuring AI tools operate safely, equitably, and in alignment with patient-centred care. This commentary examines existing AI governance models—from the EU AI Act to the World Health Organization (WHO) Ethics Guidance and the NAM AI Code of Conduct—and argues that their translation into Asia Pacific health systems requires deliberate, structured nurse-led governance mechanisms.
