Abstract

The silent epidemic, metabolic syndrome (MetS), is a serious global public health issue. Bariatric surgery is an approved treatment for obesity, where weight reduction is crucial for the control of metabolic syndrome. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of SASI versus SAGB on metabolic syndrome. The current prospective study included 112 Morbid Obese Patients with metabolic syndrome allocated in Group A (n = 56) who underwent SASI, while Group B (n = 56) underwent (SAGB). A follow-up was planned for 1 year for the remission of MetS. The mean age was 36.88 ± 5.42 years for the SASI Group and 37.24 ± 4.99 years for the SAGB Group. A significant decrease in body weight and BMI was reported within and between groups at 6 and 12 months follow-up, compared with the baseline. The %TWL was higher in SAGB Group at 6,12 months (P = 0.001∗) There was a significant remission of Met S in both groups. All patients showed improvement in HTN in 85.4 % and 88.6 % in the SASI and SAGB Groups, respectively. Type 2 DM was remitted in 89.6 % of the SASI Group and 87.3 % of the SAGB Group, respectively. In both Groups, Dyslipidemia was remitted in more than 97 % of patients. SAGB has a better weight loss than SASI, but both groups are effective in the treatment of Obesity and resolution of the related metabolic disorders.
