Abstract

All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) have become popular tools in agricultural and recreational environments due to their versatility, durability, and ability to traverse challenging terrains. With these unique characteristics, ATVs are also prone to significant safety issues. Ensuring the safety of ATV operators is crucial for reducing injuries and fatalities associated with ATV incidents. This review paper examines ATV incidents, focusing on rollovers, identifies key contributing factors, and assesses existing safety measures and their limitations. It also explores the potential of emerging technologies such as Digital Twin (DT), Virtual Reality (VR), and Machine Learning (ML) to enhance the safety of ATV operators. Furthermore, it emphasizes the role of modern technologies in improving decision-making, system performance monitoring, real-time feedback control, safety analysis, risk assessment, and operator training. Recent technological advancements provide a foundation for developing data-informed preventive strategies and proactive safety interventions in ATV operations. Applying DT, VR, and ML shows significant potential to mitigate ATV rollover incidents and advance occupational safety in off-road vehicle environments. Finally, this review paper incorporates a conceptual framework for integrating the emerging technologies to prevent the ATV rollover incidents and save the ATV operators lives.
