Breast RT microcalcifications: a stress test for trainee-led magnetic-seed lumpectomy
Abstract
Corsi and colleagues show that, under supervision, residents achieved margin status and low complication rates comparable to attendings in 3195 breast-conserving surgeries for non-palpable lesions [1]. A clinically meaningful signal, however, appears in the microcalcification subgroup with magnetic seed localization: residents had involved margins in 28.6% versus 6.4% for attendings (p = 0.09) [1]. Because microcalcifications often correspond to in situ disease, this absolute gap could translate into avoidable re-excisions and patient anxiety, even if it misses conventional statistical thresholds.
