Eosinophilic Myocarditis With Eosinophil Extracellular Traps and Charcot-Leyden Crystals
Abstract
Eosinophil extracellular traps (EETs) are a host defense mechanism in which net-like DNA structures and intracellular toxic granules are released to capture and damage pathogens.1 EETosis, the programmed cell death process associated with EET formation, has been implicated in various eosinophilic disorders.2 In eosinophilic myocarditis (EM), released eosinophil granules damage cardiomyocytes2; however, the mechanism of the release remains unexplored. Here, we describe the first case demonstrating EETosis in EM confirmed by both immunofluorescence (IF) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).
