Abstract

The suitable vibration absorber structure (VAS) could obtain an evident vibration-damping effect by transferring the main body vibration energy of the cutting tool (CT) into itself. In this research, a novel damping cutting tool incorporating a vibration absorber structure (CT-VAS) is proposed. A phase compensation analysis and prediction model is established to quantitatively determine the key design parameters of the VAS. To validate the accuracy of the proposed model and assess the vibration suppression performance of the tunable damping tool, both static and dynamic turning experiments were conducted. Furthermore, the concept of growth rate was introduced, defined by the growth step size ( S ) and growth height ( P ), and employed as a quantitative indicator for evaluating chatter behavior in turning processes. Experimental results demonstrate that the growth rate is an effective metric for chatter assessment, and the proposed CT-VAS exhibits excellent vibration-damping performance. These findings provide valuable guidance for the design of advanced cutting tools, particularly in high-precision applications such as aerospace and automotive manufacturing.
