Abstract

Chronic intestinal failure (CIF) requires parenteral nutrition (PN) as its main treatment to sustain health. Short Bowel Syndrom (SBS) is its main cause. Medical management includes dietary approaches, anti-secretory and anti-motility drugs. Recently, GLP-2 analogs like teduglutide for selected patients have helped treated patient to reduce PN. A multidisciplinary nutritional support team (NSTs) is essential for HPN training, covering catheter care, complication prevention, and lifestyle adaptation to promote patients' autonomy. Monitoring protocols recommend 3 months-interval visits for stable patients, to assess clinical status, anthropometrics and biochemistry. Vitamins, trace elements, and HPN complications should be monitored annually or as needed.
