Bioinspired affective system for the generation of basic emotional behaviors in cybernetic entities
Abstract
For the development of applications such as human-machine interfaces and video games, among many others, it has become necessary to provide cybernetic entities with behaviours similar to those of human beings. One of the most deeply rooted processes in living beings is undoubtedly the emotional process. Creating systems capable of perceiving and expressing emotional responses is important for improving communication with biological counterparts, among other reasons. In this article, we examine the emotional process from psychological and neuroscientific standpoints. First, we describe the components that make up an emotional response, then we review the existing classifications of emotional behaviours in the literature. We will then deepen our research into the emotional process and how it is generated within the human brain. Based on these processes as well as the relationships between them and other cognitive functions, we propose a bio-inspired model for generating reactive emotional responses associated with basic emotions. To validate our proposal, we endow a virtual creature with our proposal and analyze its behavior within a controlled virtual environment to conclude.
